About Calvary

Exceptional early childhood education and kindergarten readiness since 1954.

With preschool and pre-kindergarten programs designed around child-initiated play, inquiry, curiosity, and a climate of warmth and respect, Calvary provides a nurturing community, in which children and families can grow and feel supported during the early childhood years, where children emerge ready for kindergarten and with the foundation for a life-long love of friendship and learning.

Calvary Nursery School was founded in 1954 by a group of parents from the Calvary Presbyterian Church who wanted to provide a preschool for their community’s growing families and young children.

The school started in the church basement with only one small class. It has since grown into one of San Francisco’s leading preschools that has provided exceptional preschool education to generations of San Franciscans.

The school is now an independent non-profit organization and welcomes families of all religious traditions and beliefs. The school's classrooms are on the first and third floors of the historic church building, adjacent to the church sanctuary.

Our History

Our Campus

Located on the corner of Jackson and Fillmore in San Francisco’s Pacific Heights, Calvary’s urban campus includes beautiful and stimulating indoor and outdoor environments that are thoughtfully designed to facilitate learning and exploration.

Calvary’s primary indoor space is a large well-lit room on the third floor of Calvary Presbyterian Church’s Education Building. The space is designed to allow for the fluid exploration of different learning centers, as well as interaction among the different classes.

Calvary’s spacious, sunny rooftop playground features a large play structure, children’s garden, gravel pit, stage, open space for free play, and stunning views of the Golden Gate Bridge.
